SINGAPORE: Tokyo silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the 55kg weight category on Friday by clinching gold in the Singapore Weightlifting International.

In an uncompetitive field, Chanu lifted 191kg (86kg+105kg) to take the top spot in the 55kg weight class for the first time.

The best performance of the second-placed lifter, Australia's Jessica Sewastenko, was 167kg (77kg+90kg), a huge 24kg less than Chanu's.

Malaysia's Elly Cassandra Englebert finished third with the best result of 165kg (75kg+90kg).

After withdrawing from the global championships in December, this was Chanu's first competitive event since the historic Tokyo Games performance last year, when she won India's first Olympic silver medal in weightlifting.

On the basis of her Commonwealth ranks, the 27-year-old has also qualified for the CWG in the 49kg weight category.

However, in order to increase India's prospects of winning additional gold medals at the CWG, Chanu is set to participate in the new 55kg weight division.

The Singapore Weightlifting International serves as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

The top eight lifters in each weight category in the current event will automatically qualify for the CWG in 2022.
