NEW DELHI: The format of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) has changed, with 10 teams divided into groups of five, but the number of matches per side will stay at 14.
Group A includes the Mumbai Indians, KKR, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Supergiants.
Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans will compete in Group B.
The IPL has been an eight-team event over the years, with each team playing each other twice in the round-robin league round to complete 14 games.
This group league concept, however, is not new in the IPL; it was employed a decade ago when Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were part of the league.
NEW FORMAT
The rows and columns of the groups (A and B) were created based on IPL performance - the number of titles won and the number of finals reached.
To begin, the teams have been divided into groups based on their IPL success, with MI (Team 1) leading the way with five titles. In group B, the first team is CSK (Team 2), which has four titles.
KKR is again placed in Group A, with two titles, and SRH is placed in Group B, with a single title.
Rajasthan Royals (1 title) is Team 5 in Group A, whereas RCB, which has played three finals, is Team 6 in Group B.
DC is Team 7 in Group A, with one final appearance and two play-offs, while Punjab Kings is Team 8 in Group B, with one final appearance.
Newcomers Lucknow Super Giants are Team 9 in Group A, while Gujarat Titans are Team 10 in Group B.
HOW EACH PLAYS 14 GAMES
Each team plays the other teams in their group twice, for a total of eight matches.
The remaining six games are against the five teams in the opposing group.
As a result, MI from Group A will pay for two games against CSK, its comparable team in Group B, and one game against the other four teams.
Similarly, KKR, the second-placed team in Group A, will face SRH in Group B twice and all other teams once.
This is how teams achieve a total of (8+6) 14 group league games.
