Williams strike takes Bilbao through
Edge past Atletico in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final
RIYADH: Athletic Bilbao substitute Nico Williams scored late in the second half to help the Spanish Super Cup holders beat LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Thursday's semi-final.
Bilbao set up a showpiece clash on Sunday against Real Madrid, who beat Barcelona 3-2 on Wednesday.
After a delayed start in Riyadh's half-empty King Fahd stadium, Atletico Madrid took the lead just past the hour with an own goal by Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Joao Felix's head met Thomas Lemar's corner from the right, which struck the post before hitting the back of the diving Simon and crossing the line.
Yeray Alvarez scored from close range for Bilbao in the 77th minute with another header of a corner.
They subsequently put pressure on Atletico, whose goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced three outstanding saves.
Even the excellent Oblak couldn't stop Williams' low drive from a rebound on the edge of the box that went in off the post nine minutes from time.
Atletico defender Jose Maria Gimenez was sent off in stoppage time for a strong challenge on Inigo Martinez.
Atletico Madrid sit fourth in LaLiga, 16 points behind champions Real Madrid, and manager Diego Simeone is under increasing pressure.
