NEW YORK: Highlights from the fourth day of the U.S. Open, the year's final Grand Slam tournament, at Flushing Meadows on Thursday.

DJOKOVIC MAKES SHORT WORK OF GRIEKSPOOR

Top seed Novak Djokovic kept his quest for a calendar-year Grand Slam and his 21st major on track with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, victory over unseeded Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands.

PLISKOVA AVOIDS UPSET

Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeated local favourite Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-6(7), to advance to the third round, where she will face Ajla Tomljanovic.

SHAPOVALOV, TOMLJANOVIC THROUGH IN STRAIGHT SETS

Denis Shapovalov of Canada advanced to the third round by defeating Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-0.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia defeated Croatia's 30th seed Petra Martic 7-6(6), 6-4.

BARTY OUTPERFORMS TAUSON

The number one seed Ash Barty of Australia barely broke a sweat in defeating tournament rookie Clara Tauson. 6-1, 7-5.

RADUCANU, SAKKARI ADVANCE

British teenager Emma Raducanu advanced with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Zhang Shuai 

Maria Sakkari defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-2.

ANDREESCU SENDS LOCAL HOPE DAVIS OUT

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 champion and sixth seed from Canada, defeated American Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-4.

SINNER WINS, NISHIKORI DEFEATS MCDONALD

Jannik Sinner of Italy advanced to the third round for the first time with a 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 6-4, victory over unseeded American Zachary Svajda. 

Former finalist Kei Nishikori defeated American Mackenzie McDonald, who had beaten the Japanese world number 56 at the Washington Open last month, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-3.

SEPPI SURPRISES HURKACZ

Italy's world ranking is 89. Andreas Seppi defeated Hubert Hurkacz, the 10th seed, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(6), to advance to the third round for the first time since 2015. 

MONFILS OVERCOMES JOHNSON

Gael Monfils of France defeated American Steve Johnson 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

BATTLING BERRETTINI THROUGH

Frenchman Corentin Moutet pushed Italian Matteo Berrettini hard, but the sixth seed overcame a second-set wobble and 58 unforced errors to win 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Berrettini will face Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in the third round, who won the Winston-Salem warm-up event last month.

FLAWLESS KERBER DOWNS KALININA

Angelique Kerber of Germany, the 16th seed, defeated Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina, who had upset the German in straight sets in the first round at Roland Garros in May.

ZVEREV BLASTS PAST RAMOS-VINOLAS

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev extended his winning streak to 13 with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, victory over Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

The fourth-seeded German hit 11 aces and won 93 percent of points on the first serve.

KVITOVA TOO GOOD FOR KRISTYNA PLISKOVA

Petra Kvitova, the 10th seed, defeated fellow Czech Kristyna Pliskova 7-6(4), 6-2.

SWIATEK SURVIVES THE FERRO SCARE

Seventh seed Iga Swiatek lost the first set but came back to beat Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-0, while 28th seed Anett Kontaveit defeated Swiss Jil Teichmann 6-4, 6-1.

BENCIC POWERS INTO THE NEXT ROUND

Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, the 11th seed, defeated Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-3, 6-1, in 71 minutes.

Both players hit 16 winners, but Trevisan won 48 percent of her first-serve points and made more than twice as many unforced errors as Bencic.

BROOKSBY DEFEATS FRITZ IN AMERICAN BATTLE

Jenson Brooksby, ranked 99th in the world, came from behind to defeat compatriot Taylor Fritz 6-7(7), 7-6(10), 7-5, 6-2, in a four-hour match to advance to the third round for the first time.
