State U-19 eves win, fall short
Ishwari shines with bat, Shweta all-round show but KOs eludes
PUNE: Maharashtra made the most with the opportunity they had by scoring a 6-wicket win over Chandigarh in Round V - Elite Group D, Women's Under 19 One Day Trophy 2020-21, at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium, Surat.
Having had a frustrating tournament owing to rain, Maharashtra, with just one innings under their belt, chased the 170 run target in 33 overs. The mainstay of Mahasahtra’s win was the all-round performance by Shweta Sawant and Ishwari Savkar
Chandigarh led by openers Twinkle Pathak and Parushi Prabhakar were off to a good start pushing the total to 147/3, with the former top-scoring.
However, thereafter it was the Maharashtra bowlers Sawant (4/29) and Utkarsha Kadam (2/33) who triggered a collapse. Barring Aaradhana Bisht and Kashvee Gautam all other batters had single-digit scores, which included 4 ‘ducks’! Interestingly, the other major contributor was 25 extras.
Maharashtra’s response was quick. Shweta coupled her bowling with a well-played innings that took the score to 47 before she departed in the 14th over.
Ishwari, the top-scorer against Andhra, once again turned out to be the star and saw the innings past the 100 mark and then fell with the score reading 138/3. Thereafter, vice-captain Shravani Desai (24 n.o) and Soumyalata Birajdar (19 n.o) carried Mahasahtra through.
The win was a morale booster and also proved Maharashtra’s mettle.
Maharashtra pocked 4 points from the win to take their tally to 12 points level with Cricket Association of Uttrakhand and Andhra but ended up in the third spot owing to an inferior run rate.
