GALLE: The Sri Lankan spinners took five wickets each to set up a 164-run win over the West Indies, taking the series 2-0.

West Indies batters had no answer for Lasith Embuldeniya's (5/35) and Ramesh Mendis' (5/66) brilliant spin bowling on the final day of the second Test in Galle.

Mendis took seven wickets in the first Test and then went on to record match figures of 11/136 in this Test. He was named the Player of the Series, while Dhananjaya de Silva was named Player of the Match.

Sri Lanka started the day on 328/8, with de Silva on 153* and Embuldeniya on 25*. Embuldeniya hit a couple of boundaries before being out for 39 in the third over of the day by Jason Holder.

That dismissal called for a declaration from the Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, setting West Indies a target of 297. The 124-run partnership between de Sliva and Emuldeniya is the highest for the ninth wicket by a Sri Lankan pair in Tests.

West Indies got off to a shaky start in their chase, as Mendis struck early, dismissing Kraigg Brathwaite lbw for 6. Jermaine Blackwood was joined by Nkrumah Bonner, the No. 3 batter, and the proceedings were stabilized.

In the morning session, Sri Lanka used an all-spin attack. West Indies lost Blackwood for 36 on the stroke of lunch. When the West Indies opener tried to drive an outside-off delivery, Embuldeniya induced an edge, which de Silva caught at first slip, and the 50-run second-wicket association came to an end. The visitors went to lunch at 65/2, with 232 runs remaining.

Shai Hope and Bonner put on a 27-run stand in the second session, but his wicket sparked a collapse. Mendis caught him for 16 and struck again on the next ball to send Roston Chase back for a golden duck. Kyle Mayers became his fourth victim as he finished the same over with another wicket. The spinners tossed up outside off deliveries did the job, with the last two batters falling prey.

Soon after, Embuldeniya joined the fray, snaring Jason Holder's wicket, who fell for 3. In his next over, he dismissed the West Indies' last hope, set batter Bonner, for 44 runs. The spinner spun his web nicely, trapping the West Indies batter with an inside edge that pegged back his off-stump.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, Kemar Roach hit three boundaries but it was too late. As the rest of the lineup crumbled, no other batter stood firm.

Mendis and Embuldeniya, the spin duo, finished the West Indies innings quickly, setting up a sensational win.

Sri Lanka leads the ICC World Test Championship table after two wins in two games.
