PUNE: Over 350 judokas representing thirty-one districts will lock horns for top honours in the MLA Cup 48th State Level Junior (Boys and Girls) Judo Championship 2022 at the Maharashtra Mandal Hall, Tilak Road from 21 to 23 April.

The competition, conducted under the aegis of the Maharashtra Judo Association (MJA), will also serve as the Selection Trials for the Maharashtra teams ahead of the forthcoming Nationals.

Shailesh Tilak, MJA General Secretary, speaking at a press conference informed, “we are glad to inform that the financial support for the competition has come from the MLA fund of the existing MLA Mukta Tilak of Kasba constituency.”

He added, “A special mention of Shikshan Prasarak Mandali (SPM) who have come forward to provide the participant's accommodation for participants and officials at SP College hostel is notable.”

Mukta Tilak,  Kasba Constituency, said, “It is important that judo is learnt at school level not just as a sport but also for self-reliance. In fact, the sport has its own benefits and helps build confidence and importantly self-defence. We hope school children who watch the participants get inspired and take up the sport in numbers and go on to make Maharashtra proud.”

Datta Aphale, MJA General Secretary, Technical Committee, said, “boys and girls between 15 and 21 years of age will figure in the competition. A total of 16 titles will be up for grabs, eight in boys’ and girls' respectively. The boys’ will contest in eight groups from 55 kg to 100 kg and girls’ from 44 kg to 78 kg.

Meanwhile, Deepak Hole has been named as Competition Director and will be assisted by 35 technical officers from the State.

The tournament will be inaugurated by Ashish Shelar former member of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Also, present on the occasion was Pramod Kondhare, President BJP Kasba Constituency.
