BRASILIA: Atletico Mineiro won the Brazilian Supercup on penalties 8-7 on Sunday after a nail-biting shootout that involved 24 spot-kicks following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The match, which took place at a neutral venue in Cuiaba and had water breaks due to the scorching heat, is normally played between the Serie A and Copa do Brasil winners. However, because Atletico Madrid won both titles in 2021, Flamengo was invited to compete as the first division runners-up.

After 42 minutes, Ignacio Fernandez put Atletico ahead, but Gabriel Barbosa equalized 11 minutes later when he slammed in from close range after Bruno Henrique's header was saved.

Henrique made it 2-1 for the Rio side eight minutes later with a delightful dinked goal, only for Hulk, last year's Player of the Year in Brazil, to equalize the scores again with 15 minutes remaining.

As a result, the game went to penalties. Both teams scored the first five, but Flamengo failed to deliver the knockout blow in sudden death, with Flamengo passing up three chances to win after Atletico missed.

Instead, Everson saved Vitinho's shot after Hulk had converted Atletico's 12th kick.

Antonio Mohamed's managing career in Brazil got off to a great start as a result. The Argentine took over at Atletico in January following the departure of Cuca.
